Inner West Jr. Gala Day One Community. Stronger Together.

There’s something special about the first bounce of a new season, but this past Sunday at Wagener Oval felt like more than just a typical Round 1. It was the birth of a new tradition: the inaugural Inner West Jr. Gala Day.

If you were there, you felt the energy. If you weren’t, here’s a look at the day that brought five rival clubs together to prove that footy is the heartbeat of the Inner West.

Getting 173 Kids on the Grass

Anyone involved in community sports knows the "organized chaos" of a match day. Now, imagine multiplying that by 19 teams and five different clubs.

The goal was simple but ambitious: get 173 kids out on the field playing AFL for the first time in 2026. From our tiny Auskickers to our competitive U10s and the skill-heavy U11 Girls, every corner of Wagener Oval was alive with the sound of sirens and cheers.

The Star Power: GWS AFLW STar ‘Grace Martin’

One of the absolute highlights was having Grace Matim from the AFLW GIANTS join us. Seeing a pro athlete standing in the middle of a huddle of aspiring players is exactly what these days are about. She wasn’t just there for a photo op; she was there to inspire. Watching her chat with our U9 and U11 Girls' teams reminded us all that the pathway from Wagener Oval to the big leagues is wide open.

Fueling the Footy Spirit (The Canteen Report)

Let’s be honest: a Gala Day is only as good as its BBQ. Our volunteers pulled off a Herculean effort behind the grill to keep the crowds fed and caffeinated.

  • 115 Bacon & Egg Rolls (The early morning lifesavers)

  • 160 Sausages (The lunchtime staple)

  • 50+ Coffees (The fuel for our incredible parents and coaches)

The "Why We Do It" Moment

We all have a favorite photo from the day, but there’s one that sticks out— our 2 U7 heroes, arm-in-arm, exhausted but smiling. They're the best of mates who love the same game. That’s why we spend the weeks planning draws and sizzling sausages.

Lock It In: See You in 2027!

We’re already counting down the days until we can do it all over again. We are so excited to announce that we are officially locking in the weekend before the school holidays for the 2027 Inner West Junior Gala Day! We want to make next year even bigger and better, so clear your calendars and get ready for another massive celebration of local footy.

A Huge Thank You

To the Newtown Swans, Drummoyne Power, Glebe Greyhounds, and Concord Giants—thank you for joining us in making history. To the Inner West Junior Magpie Families volunteer who worked from sunrise to sunset—this day belongs to you.

Every child walked away with a 2026 Gala Day Spirit of AFL Medal - that said, ‘I found my footy magic at the Inner West Gala Day 2026 - One Community. Stronger Together,’ but more importantly, they walked away with a love for the game that will hopefully last a lifetime.

Big thanks to @NatSportsMedia for the photos.
